The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has announced the registration and release of its first drought-tolerant and striga-resistant maize hybrid, ILOMAZ 3, which is expected to transform maize farming in Nigeria’s Guinea Savanna region.

This innovative hybrid, designed to withstand harsh growing conditions, was developed in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) Zaria, and the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) in Ibadan.

Dr. Folusho Bankole, who presented the release proposal at the National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology’s (NACGRAB) 38th Technical Sub-Committee meeting, remarked, “ILOMAZ 3 is a significant leap forward in providing resource-limited farmers with resilient crops. This hybrid maize can resist the challenges posed by drought and striga, ensuring better yields and improved food security in vulnerable areas.”

ILOMAZ 3 follows the success of previously released hybrids, ILOMAZ 1 and 2, which have been widely adopted by farmers.

Dr. Kemi Omotesho, an agricultural extensionist with the Accelerating Genetic Gains (AGG) in Maize project, highlighted the impact of these varieties.

“Our outreach efforts and seed distribution initiatives have created remarkable demand for ILOMAZ maize varieties. Farmers recognize their potential to boost productivity even under challenging conditions.”

Socio-economist Dr. Grace Akinsola, also involved in the AGG project, emphasized the economic potential of ILOMAZ 3, stating, “This variety offers farmers a sustainable means to increase their output and livelihood. We believe that, as adoption grows, it will contribute to rural economic empowerment and long-term agricultural resilience.”

The University of Ilorin is optimistic about ILOMAZ 3’s role in reshaping Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, particularly in the drought-prone Guinea Savanna.

“When these seeds reach the hands of farmers, we are confident they will empower communities and provide a steady food source for end-users,” Dr. Bankole added.
