The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Stella Nwadigo, a 45-year-old teacher at Christ-Mitots School, Ikorodu, for allegedly abusing a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael.
The arrest, which took place on Tuesday, January 8, 2025, followed public outrage sparked by a viral video showing the teacher physically assaulting the child.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident, stated that the Lagos State Police Command is committed to ensuring justice is served. “The teacher is in custody, and we are investigating the circumstances surrounding this despicable act. The police will not tolerate any form of child abuse, and the law will take its course,” Adejobi said.
The video, which has since gone viral, captured Nwadigo’s assault on the pupil, prompting swift condemnation from child rights advocates and members of the public.
“The protection of children must remain a priority, and we commend the authorities for their prompt response,” said a representative of the Child Protection Network in Lagos.
Christ-Mitots School has not yet issued an official statement. Meanwhile, the victim is reportedly receiving medical care and counseling to aid his recovery.
The arrest has reignited calls for stricter monitoring and training of educators, as well as the enforcement of child protection laws to prevent such incidents in the future.
