To mark the 2019 World Cancer Day, Ovie Brume Foundation has provided free medical treatment to combat cancer.
This act of care and concern was shown to the residents of Tarkwa Bay communities in Lagos at an event organized by the OBF themed, “I can and I will”.
According to the Executive Director, Ovie Brume Foundation, Mrs Adeola Awogbemi noted that it has become necessary to create effective awareness on the causes of cancer in Nigeria.
“Tarkwa Bay Island was specifically chosen due to result of the survey conducted much earlier on literacy.
“We realised that most of the residents here have no understanding of lots of things, most especially their health.
“We are now in Tarkwa Bay to create awareness on cancer. More so, we brought experts to educate them on what to do when faced with the challenge whenever it surface,” Awogbemi said.
She also stated that the foundation is partnering with other foundations for continuous support for cancer patients.
“Cancer is preventable with early detection. And this is exactly what we preach.
“Ovie Brume Foundation is committed to creating awareness and the enabling environment for Cancer prevention and cure”, Awogbemi noted.
Speaking further, the Business Development Manager, Lagoon Hospital, Dr Dare Yusuf stated that cancer is the second leading cause of death all over the world.
According to Dr Durojaiye, Lagoon Hospital, 17 people die every seconds from cancer all over the world.
“Research revealed that 70, 327 people die from cancer in Nigeria in the year 2018.
“Much worst, for every 5 people infected with cancer in Nigeria, 4 dies due to lack of facilities and negligence on part of the people”, he said.
Durojaiye however warns smokers to desist from smoking because there are 7000 chemicals present in a stick of cigar. 250 of which are harmful and another 50 causes cancer.
“Tobacco cigarette is a perfect example for causes of cancer”
He therefore encourage patients and people to start eating more fruits and vegetable.
“To treat cancer is very expensive all over the world, so it is much better to prevent it,” Durojaiye reminded.
