The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the cancellation and invalidation of national service certificates issued to 101 graduates from the University of Calabar (UNICAL).

This move comes as part of the corps’ efforts to maintain the integrity of the national service programme.

According to an official statement released by the NYSC, the invalidated certificates include those of 99 individuals who were illegally mobilized for national service during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 service years. Additionally, two graduates were found to have been issued exemption certificates unlawfully.

The NYSC emphasised its commitment to ensuring that only qualified Nigerian youths, whether locally or foreign-trained, are recognized and awarded certificates of national service.

The corps particularly stressed that individuals who purportedly graduated from unaccredited universities would not be recognised, and their certificates would be invalidated.

“The management of the National Youth Service Corps hereby restates its strong commitment to ensuring that unqualified locally and foreign-trained Nigerian youths, especially those purported to have graduated from unaccredited universities, are not recognized, while only qualified persons are issued with NYSC Certificates of National Service,” the statement read.

The one-year national service is mandatory for Nigerian graduates who are 30 years old or younger at the time of completing their academic programmes. Graduates over the age of 30 are issued exemption certificates instead.

Presenting an NYSC certificate is often a requirement for employment in Nigeria, aligning with one’s educational qualifications.

NYSC spokesperson Eddy Megwa has yet to respond to inquiries for further clarification on the matter.

The NYSC has urged the public, including employers and government agencies, to take note of the names listed in the statement.

The corps also advised that the authenticity of any NYSC Certificates of National Service, Exemption, and Exclusion Letters should be verified with the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja.
