Mutfwang inaugurates panel to investigate Jos school building collapse

In response to the tragic collapse of a school building at Saints Academy in Jos, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has inaugurated a Technical Committee to investigate the incident and prevent future occurrences. The inauguration took place on Monday, July 22 at the Government House.

Governor Mutfwang highlighted that reports indicate about 12 other schools in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis are at risk of collapse, underscoring the need for urgent action.

The Technical Committee is tasked with thoroughly investigating the causes of the collapse and examining the roles of all individuals involved in the construction and maintenance of the building.

The collapse, which occurred on July 12, 2024, resulted in the death of 22 students and staff, and left 132 others injured.

Governor Mutfwang emphasized the importance of understanding the reasons behind the incident, identifying any lapses in duty, and implementing measures to prevent a recurrence.

“It is imperative that we understand why this incident occurred, identify any lapses in duty, and implement measures to prevent a recurrence. Reports indicate that around 12 other schools in the city are at risk of collapse, which necessitates urgent action,” said Mutfwang.

The Governor expressed his commitment to implementing stringent measures to ensure the safety and integrity of buildings across the state. He stressed the importance of compassion while enforcing necessary changes to avoid unnecessary hardship for the people, but emphasized that the safety of innocent lives cannot be compromised.

In addition, Governor Mutfwang directed the Secretary to the State Government to broaden the committee’s mandate to include the Jos Main Market, where reports suggest that the remaining structure is also at risk of collapse.

The committee is to investigate the demolition process, the handling of materials, and the steps needed to ensure public safety.

The Governor called on the public to provide any information that could help prevent future building collapses in the state.

The ten-member committee, headed by Prof. Slim Matawal, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them and assured diligent work to prevent future collapses.
