Morufu Alausa assumes role as Nigeria’s new Minister of Education

In a recent cabinet reshuffle, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa as Nigeria’s new Minister of Education, effective October 23, 2024.

Dr. Alausa, who previously served as Minister of State for Health, steps into his new role to address the pressing challenges within Nigeria’s education system, succeeding Prof. Tahir Mamman.

He would be joined in the ministry by Dr Suwaiba Ahmad who awaits senate confirmation in the coming days as Minister of State for Education.

A distinguished medical professional with a specialization in nephrology, Dr. Alausa brings a unique background in healthcare to his position in the education sector.

He is a graduate of the University of Lagos, where he completed his medical studies in 1993, and later honed his expertise in internal medicine during his residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

During his tenure at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Alausa was instrumental in implementing policies aimed at strengthening healthcare services across Nigeria.

His extensive experience in public administration has generated optimism among education stakeholders, who see his administrative acumen as an asset for addressing longstanding issues in Nigeria’s educational system, such as funding constraints, frequent strikes, and the urgent need for curriculum reforms.
