LASU signs partnership agreement with University of Illinois Chicago to boost global academic collaboration

Lagos State University (LASU) has strengthened its internationalisation drive with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), United States of America, to promote collaboration in teaching, research, academic exchange, and global health.

The agreement was formalised during a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony and roundtable discussion held at the UIC School of Public Health in Chicago on Tuesday, 28 July 2026.

The partnership provides a framework for strategic cooperation between both institutions, with a focus on advancing knowledge exchange, research innovation, and international academic engagement.

The LASU delegation at the event was led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr Babatunde Ogala, SAN, alongside the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM. Other members of the delegation included Governing Council members Mr Towanu Abiodun Hundeyin and Professor Shaffideen Amuwo, as well as the Registrar, Mr Emmanuel A. Fanu.

During the roundtable session, representatives of both universities explored areas of mutual interest and identified opportunities for deeper cooperation in education, research, and global health.

Under the agreement, LASU and UIC will collaborate in key areas including faculty exchange, student exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, joint educational programmes, and the exchange of academic materials.

The partnership will run for five years, with individual projects and programmes to be developed and implemented through mutually agreed arrangements between the two institutions.

Speaking on the significance of the collaboration, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, described the agreement as another major milestone in the university’s internationalisation agenda.

She said the partnership aligns with her administration’s vision of positioning LASU as a globally competitive institution, adding that the effort had received strong support from the university’s 13th Governing Council.

The Vice-Chancellor also acknowledged the contributions of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi, whose strategic engagements and commitment were instrumental to the successful completion of the partnership process.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr Babatunde Ogala, expressed optimism that the collaboration would create new opportunities for both institutions and further strengthen LASU’s position among leading universities in Nigeria.

The agreement with UIC represents the latest in a series of international partnerships pursued by LASU as part of efforts to expand its global footprint.

Recently, the university entered into a partnership with the Millennium Campus Network (MCN), which secured LASU the hosting rights for the global MCN Summit scheduled for March 2027.

Through these collaborations, LASU aims to enhance its visibility on the global academic stage while promoting research excellence, innovation, and impactful partnerships that connect local priorities with international opportunities.
