Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state has disclosed the move to pursue the call made by the management of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, to upgrade the institution to university status.

He made the disclosure when the management team of the institution paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday, during the State Executive Council meeting, at Africa House, Government House, Kano.

The team was led by the Provost of the College, Prof Yahaya Isa Bunkure, who pleaded with the governor to act on the lingering call to upgrade them to university status.

Bunkure intimated to the Council members that, they were at the Council for the visit to inform them about 40 years anniversary of the College.

Responding, the Governor said, “I am happy that the College is now a Degree awarding institution. Therefore the call for the upgrading of this College to university is without much financial commitment.

“Because most of the facilities needed are already there. Even lecturers we need to employ Professors.”

Continuing, Ganduje said, “We can see how we can pursue this so that we can actualize it. The only thing is, it will not continue awarding Certificate of Education. But we can still move all NCE Courses to other institutions. Just as some of our institutions have already started awarding NCEs.”

Ganduje acknowledged that the College is a premier College of Education, established in 1981.

Going down memory lane, governor Ganduje narrated saying “Mine is to trace the nucleus of the College of Education that started in 1976, as Gumel Advanced Teachers College. But after the creation of Jigawa state, we lost Gumel Advanced Teachers College, because it was located in Gumel, now under Jigawa state.

“Then during late Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi, he created College of Education, Kumbotso, Kano, in 1981.”
