Three Ghanaian students have emerged as the top performers in West Africa in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), clinching major honours at the 74th Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) held in Accra, Ghana.
The students, Miss Huda Suglo Suleman, Miss Paula Adzo Elinam Suwo, and Miss Matthea Aba Andoh were recognised with the prestigious WAEC International Excellence Award after outperforming over 2.6 million candidates from five member countries: The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
Miss Huda Suglo Suleman emerged as the overall best candidate in the sub-region, securing the highly coveted Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for 2025. She was ranked first, followed by Miss Paula Adzo Elinam Suwo in second place and Miss Matthea Aba Andoh in third.

The awards ceremony formed a major highlight of the Council meeting, celebrating academic excellence and reinforcing WAECโs commitment to rewarding outstanding performance across West Africa.
Speaking at the event, Ghanaโs President, John Dramani Mahama, commended the awardees for their exceptional achievements, noting that their success reflects the strength and credibility of the regionโs educational assessment system.
โThe countless citizens of the West African sub-region, holding enviable positions, are products of the rigorous and trusted systems that WAEC has put in place,โ he stated.
The recognition of the top candidates underscores the competitive nature of the WASSCE, which continues to serve as a benchmark for academic excellence and a gateway to higher education across the region.

In addition to the student awards, WAEC honoured renowned academic Professor William Afiakwa Asomaning with the Distinguished Friend of Council Award for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of the Councilโs objectives.
The Council noted that the awards not only celebrate individual brilliance but also serve as motivation for students and educators across member countries to strive for higher standards.
The 74th Annual Council Meeting, which brought together key stakeholders in education from across West Africa, also reviewed WAECโs operations and discussed strategies for strengthening examination integrity and regional collaboration.
