FUOYE to confer honorary doctorates on Onnoghen, Ooni, Sultan, Kukah at 10th Convocation

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) will confer honorary doctorate degrees on former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen (GCON); the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II; the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III (CFR); Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah; and the Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju Adugbole, during the grand finale of its 10th Convocation Ceremonies.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2026, will also serve as a grand celebration of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, whose tenure ends on February 10, 2026.

The programme of events was disclosed in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Convocation Ceremonies Sub-Committee on Media and Publicity, Prof. (Rev. Sr.) Chika Asogwa, and made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti.

According to the statement, the week-long convocation activities will commence on Sunday, February 1, 2026, with a Valedictory Church Service held in honour of Prof. Fasina.

On Monday, February 2, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor will address the media during a press conference, where he will present an account of his achievements over the past five years. This will be followed by the commissioning of several legacy projects, including the Academic Affairs Building, Senate Building, Faculty of Social Sciences Building and the new Faculty of Law Office Block. Ground-breaking ceremonies will also be conducted for new projects such as the Faculty of Arts Building, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies Building, College of Medicine Complex, and the Faculty of Computer and Information Engineering Building.

The third day, Tuesday, February 3, will feature free medical outreach programmes for host communities in Oye-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti, alongside the induction of engineering students at the Ikole campus. The day will conclude with a Senate Valedictory Session in honour of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor.

On Wednesday, February 4, Prof. Fasina will unveil his memoir titled “Holding the Rudder: My Years Steering FUOYE,” detailing his leadership journey and experiences. The day will also feature the presentation of awards of excellence to deserving members of staff.

A Valedictory Lecture in honour of Prof. Fasina will be delivered on Thursday, February 5, complemented by a convocation play staged by the Department of Theatre and Media Arts, headed by Associate Professor Mike Adeoye.

Activities lined up for Friday, February 6, include faculty and student valedictory sessions, a Muslim valedictory service during Juma’at prayers, and a Chancellor’s Dinner and cocktail reception.

The convocation ceremonies will climax on Saturday, February 7, with a convocation lecture to be delivered by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, followed by the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on the distinguished honourees.

The grand finale will also witness the award of bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate degrees and diplomas to graduating students, as well as the appointment of Professors Chinedu Nebo, Isaac Azuzu and Kayode Soremekun, former Vice-Chancellors of FUOYE, as Emeritus Professors.

The university described the convocation as a historic celebration of academic excellence, leadership and service, marking the end of a significant chapter in FUOYE’s institutional growth.
