The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its intention to reverse the merger of federal technical colleges with science schools, aiming to restore the distinct focus of technical education across the country.
This decision was revealed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during a one-day stakeholders’ meeting addressing the challenges facing technical colleges in Nigeria.
Prof. Mamman expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to merge technical colleges with science schools, stating that it undermined the original purpose of establishing technical institutions. He highlighted that technical colleges were specifically designed to cater to students with a keen interest in technical education, equipping them with the practical skills necessary to drive industrial and technological growth in the country.
“It was a mistake to merge these institutions,” Mamman remarked. “Students who are interested in pursuing science should attend dedicated science schools, while those with a passion for technical skills should have the opportunity to focus on technical education in specialized colleges.”
The Minister also expressed concern over the declining enrolment rates in technical colleges, emphasizing that these institutions play a crucial role in teaching skills that are essential for the country’s socio-economic transformation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to revitalize technical education, ensuring that these colleges return to their original mandate of providing high-quality, practical education to future generations.
This move is seen as a significant step towards restoring the integrity of technical education in Nigeria, with the government keen on ensuring that technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions fulfill their critical role in national development.
