The Federal Polytechnic Ede in Osun State has expelled 27 students for their involvement in a protest that led to property damage on campus.

The protest was in response to a night raid conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Owode, a community near Ede, where some students were arrested.

Incident and Initial Reactions

The protest took place on May 9, 2024, when students, upset by the EFCC’s actions, stormed the campus. During the demonstration, the Staff Club was attacked, and several vehicles were damaged.

The polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sola Lawal, initially stated that the institution would investigate the incident to understand its causes.

Investigation and Decisions

Following a thorough investigation, the management announced the following disciplinary actions:

  • Expelled Students: 27 students (HND 1 & 2) were expelled for their role in the protest.
  • Suspended Students: Eight students (HND 2) were suspended for two academic sessions.
  • Banned Individuals: Two former student union leaders were prohibited from entering the campus.

Official Statement

In a statement obtained in Osogbo, Mr. Sola Lawal detailed the outcomes of the investigation:

“The unprovoked attitude led to the vandalisation of individual and institution’s properties. This unwarranted action negates the motto of the great citadel which is ‘knowledge, skill, and character,’ which the institution is known for. After a painstaking and thorough investigation, the following decisions were arrived at: Expelled students -27, suspended students for two academic sessions -eight, two former student union leaders were banned from entering the campus with immediate effect.”

These actions reflect the institution’s commitment to maintaining order and upholding its values.
