
An Osogbo Chief Magistrate Court has remanded Ibrahim Muntari at the Ilesa Correctional Centre over his alleged involvement in a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of five Osun State University (UNIOSUN) students and other passengers along the Ife/Ibadan expressway.
According to a Punch report, the accident occurred last Sunday in Ikire, involving a bus driven by the defendant and an 18-passenger bus that was heading towards Ibadan.
Victims Identified
The UNIOSUN students who lost their lives in the tragic incident include:
- Olagbemide Olaoluwadotun
- Funmilola Mary Olawuyi
- Ogundare Oluwapelumi Rhoda
- Ogundare Ayomide
- Farooq Suleiman
Court Proceedings
Appearing before Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara on Wednesday, Muntari was arraigned on eight counts, including:
- Reckless driving leading to death
- Violation of traffic regulations
- Driving without valid vehicle documents
The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under:
- Section 27 of the RTA CAP 584 Laws of Nigeria
- Section 18 (b) CAP 115 Laws of Osun State of Nigeria
- Section 18 of CAP 146 Vol II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria (2002)
Defendant Pleads Not Guilty
Muntari pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The prosecutor, Jacob Akintunde, told the court:
“On the day the accident occurred, Muntari drove a bus with the registration number LAGOS EPE 796 VH on the public highway in a manner that was dangerous to the public and caused the death of six people and injured four others.”
However, defence counsel, Shaibu Gomina, pleaded with the court to grant bail to his client.
Court’s Ruling
Magistrate Ayilara denied bail and ordered Muntari’s remand at Ilesa Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned until June 2, 2025 for further hearing.
