Corps member organises literacy contest for secondary school students

A corps member in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Osun State, AbdurRasheed Adeoye has organised a literacy contest for secondary school students in the state. The finale of the contest was held on Thursday, 8th February at the Civic Centre, Ifetedo, Osun State.

Mr Adeoye, who is a graduate of the University of Lagos convened the event tagged the “Legacy Literary Contest” which featured spelling bee, debating and essay writing competitions. Preliminary elimination stages culminated in the finals.

He told EduCeleb.com that the contest was not only about literacy but also to entrench discipline and the spirit of punctuality among the about 200 attendees. First sets of arrivals attracted special prizes apart from the general prizes for winners.

With the theme “Brand for the Future”, a lecture was delivered there by Shuaib Oshunleke of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Dr Oshunleke encouraged the students to achieve their dreams by merit. He added that there could be challenges on the way, but those were surmountable and are perquisites to greatness.

The Chemical Engineering lecturer also urged the students to at least obtain a first degree as a way of branding themselves for excellence. He equally saluted the courage of all the finalists to have gone thus far in the contest.

At the end of the finals of the debating segment, Mayoress High School represented by Afolabi Babatunde Abdul Quadr and Adepoju Iyanuoluwa Felicia got the first position.

In the second position was SIAM secondary school, which was represented by Adedotun Olamide and Abiodun Deborah.

Benchmark International School, was third. Its representatives were Okunola Omolola and Ayinla Sulaiman.

In the Spelling Bee aspect, Akinremi Olawale of New Hope Model Secondary School, took the first position while Akinduro Tolani and Olajide Pelumi of Mayoress High school and Best Foundation High School respectively went home with the second and third position.

The trio of Afolabi Babatunde Abdul Quadr, Egunjobi Titilayo and Akinduro Tolani all from Mayoress High School got first, second and third positions in the essay competition. Another winner of the third position was Khalid Taofeeq of Excel Crystal Innovative Model School.

With the outcomes, Afolabi Babatunde Abdul Quadr who served as the main speaker for Mayoress High School to win the debate also won the best Essay.

Among dignitaries who witnessed the event is the Chairman of the occasion and President, Ifetedo Progressive Union, Alhaji Musediq Ojuade.

The NYSC Local Government Inspector at Ife South Local Government Area, and Chief Host, Mr Ajayi Waheed, NYSC, Osun state and the Zonal Inspector Education, Ilesha District, Osun State, Barrister Adeyemi Kehinde Olajide were also there.

The convener of the event was supported by his colleagues in the NYSC at the local government where he is the Deputy Community Liaison Officer.
