The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractice as the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates continues nationwide.

In a press release issued Tuesday, WAEC acknowledged that the exam has progressed smoothly since its commencement in April, despite some initial challenges. However, the examining body raised fresh concerns over rising efforts by rogue elements to aid cheating through social media and illegal websites.

WAEC said it has deployed sophisticated technological tools to track down candidates who patronise such platforms. “Where a candidate is found to have posted or received live questions/answers on the internet via social media, his/her entire results shall be withheld pending investigation,” the Council warned. “If found culpable, the candidate’s entire result shall be cancelled and the matter may be reported to the Nigeria Police Force.”

WAEC also stressed that all candidates must arrive at examination halls ahead of their papers, noting that supervisors have been instructed to report latecomers.

To strengthen its surveillance, the body is relying on its Candidate Identity Verification, Attendance, Malpractice, and Post Examinations Management System (CIVAMPEMS) for real-time monitoring. The system is designed to verify candidate identities, capture attendance, and report malpractice activities during the exams.

WAEC called on Nigerians to support its anti-malpractice campaign, describing the menace as a “cancer” threatening quality education and national development. “The fraudulent activities of certain unscrupulous elements must not be allowed to erode the diligent efforts of candidates who have prepared tirelessly for the examination,” the statement read.

As a world-class examining body, WAEC said it remains committed to integrity, excellence, and maintaining global standards in educational assessment.
