The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Faculty of Arts has launched a ₦500 million Endowment Trust Fund as part of activities marking its 60th Anniversary Gala and Awards held in Lagos.
The fund received an immediate boost as the Chief Launcher and Agba Akin of Iruland, Chief Tunde Fanimokun, pledged a personal donation of ₦500 million to support the initiative.
“By God’s grace, I will donate ₦500 million to the Faculty of Arts Alumni Association,” Chief Fanimokun declared, drawing applause from distinguished guests and alumni.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, praised the Faculty of Arts alumni for their continued commitment to the advancement of the institution, describing them as ambassadors whose achievements reflect the university’s values and strength.
“You make us proud. What you do reflects on us. The University of Lagos thrives because of alumni dedication,” she said.
Prof Ogunsola further commended the Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, Hon. Francis Shonubi, for his selfless contributions, noting his “heart of gold.” She also lauded Chief Fanimokun’s longstanding support to the university, recalling his funding of 120 staff housing units, which she described as “the best in Nigeria.”
“We’re beginning to own who we are. Humanities drive this. Thank you, alumni, for making us proud,” the Vice-Chancellor added.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Akanbi Mudasiru Ilupeju, expressed gratitude to the alumni community for their leadership and commitment, emphasising the value of mentorship and trust cultivated over generations.
“I was their student; today I host this emotional milestone. Alumni managed this event without interference—a testament to trust and mentorship,” he said. He urged guests to “give back to their source of success.”
Prof Ilupeju praised Chief Fanimokun’s humility and impact, stating that his presence reflected the value of nurturing student–mentor relationships. “Guide students, trust them, celebrate their wins. You’ll reap the glory,” he advised.
Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, Hon. Francis Shonubi, described the Faculty of Arts as the “heartbeat” of the university, noting that technology must be balanced with human wisdom, empathy, and creativity.
He said the Endowment Fund would provide support for indigent students, persons with special needs, and research development within the faculty.
“We urge alumni, friends, and philanthropists to contribute. Together, we can build a future we dream of. Let the Faculty of Arts shine as a beacon,” Shonubi stated.
The event brought together academics, alumni, philanthropists, and industry leaders who celebrated six decades of scholarship, leadership, and cultural impact at one of Nigeria’s most respected academic institutions.
