The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has issued a new directive prohibiting the use of hot plates, ring boilers, and gas cookers in its hostels.

This decision, outlined in a circular signed by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, aims to reduce the rising energy-related expenses faced by the institution as the school resumes after being shut for over a month.

The circular, obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), warned that any student found violating this ban would face rustication.

The prohibition is believed to be linked to a recent electricity crisis that hit the university.

The crisis was exacerbated when the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) significantly increased the university’s monthly electricity bill from N88 million to N250 million.

This sharp increase led to the disconnection of electricity on both campuses of UNIBEN, prompting students to protest on July 3, following weeks of power outages and reliance on generators.

In response to the protest, which raised concerns about potential unrest, the university Senate temporarily shut down the institution.

However, as the university reopened, the management stressed the need for students to adhere strictly to the new electricity usage policies.

In the reopening notice, Bobola emphasized that students must settle all outstanding levies, as proof of payment will be required for eligibility to sit for examinations.

Additionally, the registrar warned students against engaging in any unruly behavior or participating in unauthorized gatherings, stressing the importance of good conduct within the university community.
