The federal government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has announced plans to recruit 3,500 teaching staff across Federal Unity Colleges in a bid to improve the quality of education in Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, during a two-day national stakeholders’ forum on Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria.

The forum, organized by the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), focused on revitalizing senior secondary education in the country to ensure global competitiveness.

Dr. Sununu emphasized that the recruitment drive is part of broader efforts to enhance education nationwide.

“I want to assure you that the Ministry is currently collaborating with the Office of the Head of Service, the Federal Civil Service Commission, and other relevant government organs to recruit 3,500 teaching staff in the Federal Ministry of Education,” Sununu said.

He added that this initiative would not only improve the quality of education but also complement ongoing projects aimed at training and retraining school staff.

As part of these initiatives, the Ministry has already trained over 1,000 staff in the application of technology in education and established more than 53 vocational skills acquisition centers to cater to the skills needs of young Nigerians.

The minister highlighted that these efforts align with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to uplift the country’s educational standards.

Additionally, Dr. Sununu announced plans to build 50 new model schools across the country to further enhance teaching and learning. He noted that revitalizing the Senior Secondary Education sub-sector is crucial for shaping the future of Nigeria’s youth and ensuring the country meets global educational standards.

The Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, stressed the importance of stakeholder involvement in the successful implementation of the national policy on senior secondary education.

He called for collective efforts from state governments, NGOs, development partners, and educationalists to tackle challenges such as inadequate funding, infrastructure, and the shortage of qualified teachers.

In support of this initiative, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, represented by the Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Mark Usani, advocated for a complete overhaul of the senior secondary curriculum to make it more competitive globally.

Abbas highlighted the need to address the current challenges facing senior secondary education in the country to ensure sustainable progress.
