The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially adopted Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, transitioning it into a federal university. This significant move aims to strengthen teacher education and expand access to quality training for educators nationwide.
Established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialised university of education. With this transition, it becomes the first federally owned tertiary institution in the Ogun East Senatorial District.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over one of the state’s most prestigious educational assets. He highlighted that this move honours the legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating children and instilling patriotic leadership values at Mayflower School in Ikenne.
The President emphasised that TASUED’s transition into a federal university is a strategic step in the Federal Government’s commitment to bolstering teacher education and enhancing the quality of instruction across all educational levels. With this new status, the Federal Government now oversees three universities of education: TASUED, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri, and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo.
This development has been met with widespread acclaim. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and TASUED alumni have lauded the Federal Government’s decision, expressing optimism that the university’s new status will enhance educational opportunities and contribute to national development.
The Ogun State Government has also commended the Federal Government for this initiative. Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed his administration’s appreciation, noting that the transition would bring positive transformation to the specialised institution. He reaffirmed his commitment to educational advancement, emphasising that TASUED would continue to serve as a centre of excellence in teacher education.
This strategic move underscores the Federal Government’s dedication to advancing higher education and honouring the legacies of regional icons who have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s educational development.
