The Osun and Kwara State Governments have declared Monday, July 8, 2024, a public holiday to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1446AH.
The Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, announced the holiday and urged Islamic faithfuls to use the period to pray for peace, progress, and development in the state and the nation.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Hon. R.K. Aderibigbe, the governor emphasized the importance of reflection and spiritual renewal during the celebration.
“This is to inform the general public that His Excellency the Governor of Osun State, Dr. Senator Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke, has declared Monday, July 8, 2024, as a public holiday to celebrate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1446AH,” the statement read.
Similarly, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq also approved the public holiday.
In a statement by his spokesman, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor acknowledged the significance of the occasion and called for deeper reflection on the community’s journey and its responsibilities towards tolerance, mutual respect, and justice.
“The Governor shares in the mixed memories that this occasion brings to the Muslims annually and calls for deeper introspection on the journey of the community and its duty to be the light bearers for tolerance, mutual respect, and justice,” the statement said.
Governor Abdulrazaq extended his wishes for a blessed new Hijrah year, praying for the blessings of Allah on the community and its continued goodness.
These declarations underscore the importance of the Islamic New Year in fostering spiritual growth and unity within the Muslim community and beyond.
