The Ekiti State Government has introduced a free milk distribution programme for public primary school pupils across the state as part of efforts to enhance child nutrition, boost school attendance, and improve learning outcomes.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji flagged off the initiative on Wednesday in Ikun-Ekiti, under a partnership between the state and Promasidor Nigeria Limited—the company managing the Ikun Dairy Farm. The project, known as the Ikun Free Milk Initiative, will provide milk weekly to pupils in public schools, beginning with Ikun community schools.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Oyebanji described the initiative as a strategic complement to the national homegrown school feeding programme, underscoring the role of nutrition in cognitive development and educational achievement.
“Proper nutrition is fundamental to the cognitive and physical development of our children,” Oyebanji said. “This initiative will not only boost their health but also help to increase enrolment and attendance in our public primary schools.”
He praised Promasidor’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to sustain a business-friendly environment through supportive policies, improved infrastructure, and enhanced security.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Muktah—represented by Victor Egbon, Director of Corporate and Monogastric at the Ministry—commended the partnership and described the Ikun Dairy Farm as a model for livestock innovation in Nigeria. He called on other states to replicate the initiative, saying it aligns with national goals for food security, job creation, and rural development.
Promasidor’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Enom Udoma-Eniang, lauded the collaboration and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting education and development in its host community.
“The Ikun Free Milk programme reflects our commitment to giving back. Promasidor remains dedicated to sustaining its investment in Ekiti and exploring more opportunities for collaboration,” he said.
Earlier, the governor toured the Ikun Dairy Farm alongside top government officials and representatives of Promasidor. He inspected key facilities including the production line and livestock feeding areas, expressing satisfaction with the farm’s growth in herd size, milk output, and job creation.
The initiative aligns with Ekiti State’s broader education and nutrition strategy aimed at improving learning conditions and child welfare in public schools.
