Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday inaugurated the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, describing it as a landmark achievement in the state’s ongoing investment in education, research, and innovation.
The ultra-modern complex—now acclaimed as the largest university library in West Africa—is equipped with digital research facilities, innovation laboratories, reading lounges, and extensive archival resources designed to serve both students and researchers across disciplines.
Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the library was not merely a physical edifice but a “living testament to the transformative power of learning and the dreams of generations to come.”
“This moment is deeply personal for me, not because it bears my name, but because it embodies the ideals that have shaped my journey. Education remains the bridge between potential and purpose—the most enduring legacy any generation can bequeath to the next,” the governor said.
He explained that the new facility symbolises the education and technology pillars of his administration’s THEMES Plus Agenda, noting that Lagos would continue to prioritise learning and innovation as drivers of sustainable development.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessors, Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and Akinwunmi Ambode, to the growth of LASU and its infrastructure. He added that his administration had “committed more resources than ever before” to completing the library and other educational projects across the state.
“We see this not just as an infrastructure masterpiece but as part of our ongoing investment in minds. Lagos will never stop investing in education because it is the educated mind that creates inventions, heals wounds, and redefines tomorrow,” he said.
The governor further expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support of educational development and for promoting policies that strengthen human capital across the nation.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the naming of the library after him “is not a monument to self, but a symbol of service,” urging students and staff of LASU to take ownership of the facility and use it to advance creativity, scholarship, and innovation.
“This library will be a space of discovery, dialogue, and dreaming—where the next Nobel laureate, great author, visionary leader, or even future president will begin their journey,” he said, quoting Chinua Achebe to remind students that “one of the toughest tests of integrity is a blunt refusal to be compromised.”
The governor pledged to complete other ongoing projects within the university, including new faculty complexes, assuring that his administration’s commitment to education would remain unwavering.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, commended the Lagos State Government for its consistent prioritisation of education, describing the new library as “a model for what visionary investment in knowledge infrastructure should look like.”
The Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex is expected to serve as a regional hub for research, innovation, and academic excellence—marking a new chapter in LASU’s evolution as one of Nigeria’s leading centres of learning.
