The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has successfully completed his doctorate in Islamic Law at the University of London, United Kingdom.

A video that surfaced online shows the former monarch visibly emotional as he received the news that his thesis was approved without any corrections, marking a significant academic achievement.

Sanusi’s thesis, titled “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco,” reflects his deep engagement with Islamic legal scholarship and social reform.

The video also captures the moment Sanusi was congratulated during a virtual meeting, highlighting the culmination of years of dedication to his research.

Sanusi embarked on this PhD journey following his deposition as Emir of Kano by the then Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, in 2020.

After relocating to the UK, Sanusi focused on his studies and eventually completed the programme.

Prior to this, Sanusi was awarded a visiting fellowship at the African Studies Centre of the University of Oxford in 2020, just months after his dethronement.

His academic accolades also include an honorary doctorate in finance from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, awarded in 2019.
