Olayinka inaugurated as pro-chancellor of West Midlands Open University

Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Idowu Olayinka, has been inaugurated as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of West Midlands Open University, Ibadan.

The inauguration also included other council members: Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olumide Babatope Longe; Senate Representative Air Commodore (Dr.) Akeem Adebomehin; Convocation Representative Prof. Adenike Osofisan; Mrs. Bisi Asimolowo; Mrs. Deola Ajayi; National Universities Commission (NUC) Representative Dr. Ligari Gabriel Hadu; and University Registrar Mr. Adekunle Durosinmi, who also serves as the Council Secretary.

Promoting Literacy through Distance Learning

In his remarks, Prof. Olayinka highlighted Nigeria’s persistent illiteracy challenges, particularly in rural areas, and emphasized the potential of distance learning to bridge the educational gap.

“Distance learning has a long history in Nigeria, dating back to the 19th century. Modern technology has made it more effective and widespread. It can provide opportunities for previously unreached populations to access education, thereby increasing literacy rates,” Olayinka said.

He pledged the council’s commitment to good corporate governance, ethical standards, and strict adherence to NUC regulations.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olumide Longe outlined the university’s mission to provide accessible, high-quality education that fosters socioeconomic and technological advancement in Nigeria.

“We are committed to offering affordable and relevant learning programmes that empower individuals and communities, while redefining the educational landscape in Nigeria and beyond,” he said.

A Vision for Leadership and Excellence

The founder and Visitor of the university, Oba Adebayo Akande, Ekarun Olubadan of Ibadanland, expressed confidence in the institution’s mission to nurture future leaders and uphold academic excellence. He offered prayers for the success of the new Governing Council in fulfilling its mandate.
