Ebonyi State’s Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Amari Omaka, has confirmed that the two newly established universities in the state are set to begin academic activities early next year.

The announcement follows the swearing-in of the acting vice chancellors for the University of Information Communication Technology, Oferekpe-Agbaja, and the University of Aeronautical Engineering, Ezza.

Speaking to journalists at the New Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki, Professor Omaka noted that while the initial goal was to have the universities operational by September, the commencement has been delayed to ensure thorough preparations are made.

“Our initial target was for the universities to take off by September, but it appears that may not be realistic because a lot of things have to be done,” Omaka explained.

He cited the ongoing construction of academic buildings and the development of university master plans as key reasons for the delay. Despite this, he expressed confidence that both institutions would be ready to welcome their first batch of students by early 2025.

The acting vice chancellors—Professor Ernest Egba for the University of Information Communication Technology and Professor Patrick Nwofe for the University of Aeronautical Engineering—were charged with significant responsibilities in ensuring the seamless operation and establishment of the universities.

“This appointment is not to come and drink tea, but to come and work,” Omaka emphasized, highlighting the importance of their roles in engaging with relevant authorities, including the National Universities Commission (NUC), to secure the necessary approvals for the universities.

Professor Egba, the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Information Communication Technology, expressed his dedication to advancing the university’s mission. “I’m overwhelmed by what happened, and I promise to do my best to keep the flag flying,” he stated, expressing optimism about the institution’s future.

Similarly, Professor Nwofe, the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Aeronautical Engineering, pledged to fulfill his duties in alignment with the state’s educational goals. He assured that the university would become a world-class institution, saying, “I will perform my duties as expected and ensure that the people’s charter of needs mantra concerning education, for which, today, I have been given a special assignment, is fulfilled.”

Both leaders conveyed their commitment to establishing universities that will make Ebonyi State and the broader educational community proud, setting high expectations for their institutions’ future contributions to the academic landscape in Nigeria.
