Abuja, Nigeria – April 2025 — In just under a year since it began operations, the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has recorded over 500,000 student loan applications—marking a major milestone in the push to make higher education more accessible for Nigerian students.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Fund’s Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, who described the achievement as a reflection of growing public confidence in the Fund’s mission.

“This is more than just a number, it’s a signal of hope for families across Nigeria. We are witnessing a nationwide demand for opportunity, and NELFUND is proud to be at the heart of this transformation,” said NELFUND Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr.

Since the launch of its application portal, the Fund has seen enthusiastic participation from students seeking support for both tuition and upkeep loans. The volume of applications highlights the urgent need for sustainable student financing mechanisms and underscores the relevance of the government-backed initiative.

NELFUND reiterated its commitment to maintaining a transparent, efficient, and student-friendly process, and called on institutions, parents, and other stakeholders to collaborate in advancing equitable access to tertiary education.
