The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) are set to stage a three-day national protest over a memorandum of understanding (MoU) it reached with the federal government on some issues, including the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

The joint action committee (JAC) of both unions disclosed this in statement on Saturday signed by Peters Adeyemi, NASU general secretary, and Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU president.

In the statement, the unions said the protest will take effect from January 12 to 14 and will be held at all branches of universities and inter-university centres.

It also stated that the protest became necessary due to the federal government’s failure to address the issues contained in the MoU both parties signed last October.

“The JAC observed with disappointment that the federal government has completely failed to address any of the issues contained in the memorandum of understanding (MoU),” it read.

“Delay in the renegotiation of FGN, NASU and SSANU 2009 agreement, non-payment of retirement benefits of outgone members, teaching staff usurping headships of non-teaching units in clear violation of conditions of service and establishment procedures.”

Among some of the issues also listed as part of the content of the MoU are inconsistencies in IPPIS payments and non-payment of earned allowances.

Other issues are the non-payment of arrears in the minimum wage, funding for state universities, and non-constitution of visitation panels for universities.
