Adenike Okunlaya, the mother of three-year-old Abayomi Michael, who was assaulted by a teacher, Stella Nwadigbo, at Christ-Miltos Primary School, Ikorodu, Lagos, has revealed that her son suffered injuries to his ears, potentially leading to hearing impairment.
In an emotional interview with journalists on Thursday, Okunlaya disclosed that medical tests conducted at Ikorodu General Hospital confirmed the injuries.
“The doctor said his ears had been affected and directed us to a department in the hospital for further examination,” she said. “The medical report has been handed over to Supo Bola at the Owutu Police Station.”
The widow, who is also a teacher at the school, recounted how her son had previously complained about being beaten by Nwadigbo, but she dismissed it, assuming it was normal disciplinary action.
“My boy usually complained that the teacher beat him often, but I thought it was just the usual spanking. I didn’t take it seriously because the woman was my colleague at work,” she explained.
Okunlaya admitted that her perspective changed after she saw the viral video capturing Nwadigbo repeatedly slapping her son during a lesson.
“When I saw the video, I felt sad. That was why I sent it to a friend, who later shared it with someone else. I believe that’s how the video got leaked,” she said.
Despite witnessing the abuse, Okunlaya revealed that she did not confront Nwadigbo or report the incident directly to the school management. Instead, she confided in her pastor, who escalated the matter to the headmistress.
“All I want is justice for my son,” she added, urging authorities to ensure the teacher is held accountable for her actions.
The case has drawn widespread condemnation and led to Nwadigbo’s arrest. She has been arraigned in court and remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Facility pending further legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has invoked the Child Rights Act against her and vowed to enforce the protection of children’s rights.
