Staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) have declared an indefinite strike, effective immediately, following unresolved disputes with the university’s management.
The industrial action was jointly declared by the university’s four major staff unions under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee. These include the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
In a formal notice dated 31st July 2025, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions conveyed their decision to commence the strike after an emergency congress. The letter was signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare and Dr Sylvester O. Idowu, as well as SSANU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Mr Oluwaseyi Lawal and Mr Waheed Majekodunmi. Similar endorsement is presumed from the leadership of NASU and NAAT, both of which are part of the Joint Action Committee.
The unions ordered all staff members across LASU’s main campus in Ojo and its affiliate campuses — including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja and the Epe campus — to withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts immediately.
The statement reads in part:
“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU & NASU-LASU) that an INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION should commence effective from Thursday 31st July, 2025, we write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University.”
It further emphasised:
“The strike action will be in force INDEFINITELY until all the demands of Staff Members are met by the appropriate authorities.”
As the strike takes effect, academic activities across the university are expected to be paralysed. Students were scheduled to begin the second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session next week Monday, but this development casts serious uncertainty over the examination timetable.
While the unions did not publicly outline the specific grievances prompting the strike in the notice, the move reflects a breakdown in negotiations and growing discontent among staff. The letter concluded by thanking the Vice-Chancellor for her past support, while firmly reiterating the unions’ resolve to press home their demands.
The university management is yet to issue an official response as at the time of this report.
