An Ikeja Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court has sentenced Kolawole Muyiwa, a former part-time lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (now Lagos State University of Education), to life imprisonment for the rape of a student.
The incident occurred on October 11, 2021, within the premises of the college in Oto-Ijanikin, Lagos State. The survivor testified that she arrived early for a departmental meeting and was approached by Muyiwa, who requested her assistance in purchasing food. After initially declining due to her meeting, she agreed to help retrieve a flask from his office. Once inside, Muyiwa locked the doors, overpowered her, and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her, despite her being menstruating at the time.
During the trial, Muyiwa denied the allegations, claiming he had only sought a platonic relationship with the student. However, Justice Rahman Oshodi found him guilty, emphasizing that as a lecturer, Muyiwa occupied a position of trust and authority, which he abused. The judge noted that the survivor provided a detailed and consistent account of the assault, even under cross-examination.
In his ruling, Justice Oshodi stated: “You are a first-time offender with no criminal record, and you are married with three children. You also served as a part-time lecturer. However, the gravity of the offence committed cannot be overlooked. As a part-time lecturer, you occupied a position of trust and authority which you abused; the victim was a student at the institution where you taught.”
Consequently, Muyiwa was sentenced to life imprisonment, and his name will be registered in the Lagos State Sex Offender Register.
This case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to addressing sexual offences and protecting the rights and dignity of students within educational institutions.
