The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised alarm over the circulation of fraudulent messages targeted at candidates registered for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

In a statement signed by JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, on Wednesday, the Board described the messages as false, misleading, and criminal in nature, warning candidates and the general public to disregard them.

According to the Board, suspected fraudsters are exploiting the numerical variant of the UTME code, “8863”, and combining it with JAMB’s legitimate short code, “55019”, to fabricate a deceptive code resembling JAMB’s official messaging system.

“These scammers have been sending out messages claiming that candidates’ details on the JAMB platform have been manipulated. They then urge the recipients to contact certain individuals who will supposedly help ‘rectify’ the issue,” the statement said.

JAMB clarified that these messages are not from the Board and assured the public that security agencies have been informed and are already working to track down those responsible for the fraudulent scheme.

“This is a common tactic by fraudsters who attempt to exploit the examination period to prey on unsuspecting candidates. We urge candidates to disregard any such communication,” the Board advised.

The Board further cautioned the public to verify all information and only rely on JAMB’s official communication platforms. Any message not emanating from JAMB or containing suspicious content should be treated as fraudulent.

“JAMB remains committed to protecting the integrity of its processes and the interests of all candidates,” the statement concluded.
