Georgewill Owunari emerges as new UNIPORT vice-chancellor

The University of Port Harcourt has got a new Vice-Chancellor.

He is Georgewill Owunari. Professor Owunari is a medical doctor and Professor of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences at UNIPORT.

The keenly contested position had 12 contestants for the top job at the university.

This ends the about a year tussle to appoint a substantive person as chief executive at the second generation university.

Owunari was former Deputy Provost of the College of Health Sciences. He becomes 2nd AKULGA indigene to be VC of Uniport after the graceful Emeritus, Professor Nimi Briggs

Announcing the results and Presenting the new VC to journalists in Port Harcourt, UNIPORT Governing Council chairman, Senator Ifeanyi Uchendu assured the public of the council being meticulous through the selection process “with the full provisions of the act on the selection of the vice chancellor of the university”.

“After interviewing about twelve of them we found three of them appoint-able,” he added.

“For the first time in my life I have received a delegation of the President to act on his behalf and on behalf of the president I want to announce to all of us that the council of the university have considered the report of the selection board and approved the appointment of Professor Georgewill Owunari as the 9th vice chancellor of the University of the Port Harcourt”.

Professor Owunari takes over from Professor Stephen Okududu who was appointed last year on acting capacity.

Addressing journalists after he was announced as the VC, Professor Owunari promised to carry everyone along during his time in office.
