A 300-level student from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Christiana Idowu, has been abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos. The abduction took place last week while she was traveling from her home in Ikorodu to the University of Lagos in Yaba, where she was undergoing industrial training.
According to a family source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N3 million for Christiana’s release. After intense negotiations, the amount was reduced to N350,000. Despite paying the N350,000 ransom into an account specified by the kidnappers, they refused to release her and demanded that the family provide the bank statement from which the ransom was paid.
The source stated, “They are communicating with the family through her WhatsApp, and they demanded N3 million. We appealed to them, and it was reduced to N1 million, then N500,000, and later, they asked that we pay N350,000. After we paid the N350,000 ransom, they refused to release her and demanded the bank statement of the account we used for the transfer.”
The family, feeling overwhelmed by the situation, has sought assistance from the police and is calling on the government and the general public for support. “We have reported the matter to the police and can no longer handle it as a family. We are urging the government and the public to come to our aid,” the source added.
When contacted, Ogun State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Folashade Oluwole, stated she had not been informed of the incident but promised to look into the matter. She had not provided an update as of the time this report was filed.
In a related development, an earlier incident on August 22 in Lagos saw a group of youths foil an attempted kidnapping of a car dealer on Ebute Igbogbo Road in Ikorodu Local Government Area. The suspects—Taiwo Olayinka, Azeez Sodiq, and Saheed Moonstruck—were apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command.
A viral video circulated online showed the suspects, stripped and bloodied, being interrogated and beaten by the youths who caught them after the botched kidnapping attempt. The Lagos State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on X (formerly known as Twitter), clarifying that the three individuals were under investigation for their involvement in either theft or kidnapping.
As the search for Christiana Idowu continues, her family remains hopeful for her safe return and urges anyone with relevant information to come forward.
