The Federal Government has inaugurated a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Reform Committee aimed at reviewing the NYSC Act and repositioning the scheme to better serve Nigeria’s youth and national development priorities.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, following a high-level meeting with the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, and Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman.
Dr. Alausa described the committee’s inauguration as a “critical move” towards making the NYSC a more responsive, skill-driven and impactful institution that aligns with the current realities and aspirations of young Nigerians.
“We are collectively committed to ensuring that NYSC evolves into a more dynamic, responsive, and impactful institution—one that is aligned not just with national development goals but also with the current realities and aspirations of Nigeria’s young people,” he stated.
One of the key proposals under consideration is the creation of optional two-year service tracks—specifically a Medical Corps and a Teacher Corps. Under this arrangement, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and educators would be deployed to underserved rural communities, helping to address significant gaps in healthcare and education delivery.
The proposed reforms, according to the Minister, are designed to elevate NYSC from a mere post-graduation requirement to a strategic national programme that fosters unity while also delivering tangible socio-economic benefits.
“Our belief is that these reforms will elevate the NYSC into a strategic institution that not only fosters unity but also delivers tangible value to both the nation and the individuals who serve,” Alausa said.
He affirmed his commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to implement the reforms and ensure that every Nigerian graduate is equipped and empowered to contribute meaningfully to the country’s progress.
