The Federal Government has officially renamed Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) as Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) in a strategic move aimed at enhancing technical and vocational education across Nigeria.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the decision during a stakeholders’ meeting on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Abuja, stating that the change aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to reduce youth unemployment, create jobs, and foster a technologically driven society.

A Shift in Educational Priorities

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Nasir Gwarzo, emphasized that the renaming signifies more than just a name change—it represents a major shift in Nigeria’s educational priorities. The goal is to equip students with industry-relevant technical skills that prepare them for the rapidly evolving workforce.

The move is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to reposition TVET as a key driver of national development, ensuring that Nigerian graduates are better prepared for employment and entrepreneurship.

Challenges in Teacher Participation

During the meeting, Dr. (Mrs.) Olodo M.A, Director of Technology and Science Education, highlighted concerns over low teacher participation in STEM and TVET training. She urged for better coordination in training programs to enhance teacher development without disrupting student learning.

Improving Student Transitions

In addition, Mrs. Offokeansi I. S., Chairman of all Federal Technical Colleges and Principal of FTC Otukpo, called on principals to improve communication and coordination during student transitions. She stressed the need to prevent overcrowding and ensure that no JSS 3 student is denied admission into FTCs due to capacity constraints.

Implications for Nigeria’s Economic Growth

This strategic restructuring of technical education is expected to:

  • Equip Nigerian youth with practical, job-ready skills
  • Strengthen the link between education and industry needs
  • Promote self-employment and entrepreneurship
  • Address skill gaps in critical sectors of the economy

With the renaming of FSTCs to FTCs, the Federal Government aims to reshape the country’s education system to meet the demands of a modern economy, ensuring that Nigerian students are not just academically prepared but also technically skilled and employable.
