The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Olugbenga Akinola, for allegedly issuing fake university certificates to unsuspecting students in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, made this known during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, 17 April 2025.
Eribo explained that Akinola, along with an accomplice, Sunday Adesanmi, falsely claimed to operate an affiliate centre of Kwara State University.
The police revealed that Akinola, popularly known as a “professor,” had been enrolling students and awarding them fake Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees over several years. The deception came to light after one victim, upon visiting Kwara State University’s main campus, discovered that his certificate was invalid and not recognised by the institution.
“Based on credible intelligence received on 18 February 2025, detectives uncovered an illegally operated study centre in Ado-Ekiti, issuing unauthorised degrees,” said CP Eribo.
He confirmed that university authorities denied any affiliation with the centre and its operators.
Both suspects have been arraigned in court on charges related to fraud and impersonation.
In addition, CP Eribo disclosed that seven other suspects were recently arrested for offences relating to the rape of minors across the state. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents and urged the public to support police efforts by providing credible information about criminal activities.
