The Governing Council of Edo State University, Uzairue, has suspended the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dawood Egbefo, citing alleged gross violations of financial regulations and incompetence. The suspension, effective November 4, 2024, was confirmed in a letter signed by Betcher Ekhosuhun, Officer-In-Charge of the Legal Services Unit, and authorized by Council Chairman Prof. Emeritus T.O.K Audu.
The decision followed an emergency meeting held on October 30, 2024, during which the Council reviewed Prof. Egbefo’s response to a prior query. According to the letter, the suspension is based on allegations of contract splitting, misappropriation of university funds, and non-compliance with due process, alongside concerns about Prof. Egbefo’s management of university affairs.
To investigate these allegations, the Governing Council has established a committee chaired by Most Rev. Gabriel G. Dunia, Bishop of the Auchi Catholic Diocese. The committee is tasked with thoroughly examining the claims against Prof. Egbefo and providing recommendations to the Council.
Prof. Egbefo has been directed to vacate his position immediately and hand over responsibilities to Prof. M.J.E. Evbogbai, the university’s Director of JUPEP (Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board), to ensure the investigative committee has unrestricted access to relevant university files and documents.
