The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reiterated its decision to sanction academic collaborations with Lagos State University (LASU) until five of its members, who were allegedly wrongfully dismissed, are reinstated.

This decision was reaffirmed during ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Ibadan on August 17 and 18, 2024.

ASUU has mandated its members to suspend all academic engagements with LASU, including sabbatical leave, part-time lectureship, external examinations, and research collaborations.

This action stems from the dismissal of five ASUU officials at LASU in 2019, who were accused of unauthorized removal and dissemination of confidential documents.

Despite an appeal committee recommending their reinstatement in 2022, the governing council of LASU reversed its decision 48 hours later, leaving the lecturers’ reinstatement on hold.

The union has called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene and reinstate the dismissed lecturers.

ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke expressed disappointment with the Lagos State government’s delay in releasing the White Paper on the visitation panel to LASU, more than two years after the exercise.

In addition to the situation at LASU, ASUU also criticized the ongoing management crises and victimization of members in other universities, including Kogi State University, Ebonyi State University, and Federal University of Technology Owerri.

The union condemned the poor funding of universities and the federal government’s failure to address various outstanding issues, including the termination of the 2009 ASUU agreement.

ASUU has given the government a 21-day ultimatum to resolve these issues, warning that it will reconvene to take further actions if the demands are not met.
