Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has secured a prestigious €5 million grant under the Horizon Europe EDCTP3 call to develop an AI-powered microscope for diagnosing parasitic diseases such as African trypanosomiasis, malaria, leishmaniasis, and filariasis.
The grant-winning project, MultiplexAI, is among only four selected under the ‘Innovative Digital Health Solutions for Sub-Saharan Africa’ initiative and is the only one awarded to a Nigerian university. It aims to transform rural and hard-to-reach health care through AI-driven diagnostics using a smartphone, microscope, and dedicated app.
Leading the project is Dr Gloria Dada Chechet, a Reader in Biochemistry at ABU and a molecular parasitologist affiliated with the university’s Africa Centre of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB). Dr Chechet’s work focuses on diagnostics, disease control, and gender equity in global health.
A Fellow of both the Science by Women and Learn Africa programmes, she has received wide international support for her contributions to global health and representation of African women in science.
The landmark achievement places ABU among Africa’s foremost institutions in digital health research, reinforcing its global partnerships and leadership in innovative healthcare solutions.
The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the University Council and Management, lauded Dr Chechet and ACENTDFB for their leadership and success in securing the highly competitive award.
