At just 14 years old, Zainab Akinola has already accomplished what many adults spend years striving for—earning over 30 certifications in software engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning. Yet, only two years ago, she had envisioned a completely different future—one in medicine.
Too young for university under Nigeria’s higher education admission rules, Zainab found herself in an unexpected detour that would ignite her passion for technology. Today, she is not just a certified software engineer, but an innovator determined to merge AI with medicine to solve complex healthcare challenges.
An Early Start and an Unexpected Setback
Born with a sharp intellect and a hunger for knowledge, Zainab completed secondary school at just 12 years old—an exceptional feat. Like many brilliant young minds, she had her sights set on medicine, inspired by her father, who fondly called her “Doctor Zainab.” She had excelled in subjects like Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry and had confidently taken the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination in 2023, scoring an impressive 262.
Her dreams, however, came crashing down when she learned she was ineligible for admission because Nigerian universities do not accept students below 16 years old.
“It was devastating,” she recalls. “I had worked so hard, and suddenly, I had to wait four more years before I could begin my medical studies.”
A New Path in Tech
Recognizing his daughter’s frustration, Zainab’s father encouraged her to explore software engineering in the meantime. Initially, she was uninterested. However, when he introduced her to the idea of using artificial intelligence in medicine, something clicked.
“That was the moment I saw the bigger picture,” Zainab explains. “If I could learn AI, I could revolutionize how we diagnose and treat diseases.”
With this newfound vision, she dived headfirst into software engineering and AI studies.
Building Expertise in Software Engineering and AI
Despite her young age, Zainab demonstrated remarkable discipline and drive, enrolling in various renowned global tech programs:
- ALX Software Engineering Program – Focused on front-end development.
- Techvinson Academy – Specialized in back-end software engineering.
- KemonAI – Studied artificial intelligence and machine learning.
- Udemy, RITA Africa, SheCodes, and GreatLearning – Took courses in AI, machine learning, and web development.
Through these platforms, she mastered programming languages like C, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java, and Python. She also became proficient in frameworks like React and Bootstrap, as well as development tools such as Git and GitHub.
Putting Knowledge into Action
Eager to apply her skills, Zainab embarked on multiple tech projects, including:
- A Quote Generator – Produces random inspirational quotes.
- An E-commerce Website – A platform for buying and selling products.
- A Real Estate App – Designed for real estate companies.
- A Portfolio Website – Showcasing her projects and certifications.
- A Poem Generator – Uses AI to craft poetry.
- Chatbots for Schools and Law Firms – Automates communication for various institutions.
These hands-on experiences sharpened her problem-solving skills and solidified her belief that technology could play a transformative role in medicine.
Merging Medicine and AI
Despite her success in tech, Zainab’s passion for medicine remains unwavering. Now, however, she sees AI as an essential tool in healthcare, from assisting in diagnostics to enhancing robotic surgeries and medical research.
“I don’t just want to be a doctor,” she says. “I want to be a doctor who uses AI to solve real-world medical challenges.”
Unfortunately, no Nigerian university currently offers a program that integrates AI with medicine. As a result, Zainab is exploring international opportunities where she can study a hybrid program combining medicine and AI-driven healthcare innovation.
“If I receive an offer from a foreign university, I would accept it in a heartbeat,” she admits. “But even if I have to wait until I turn 16 to study medicine in Nigeria, I’ll use the time to deepen my AI knowledge and work on research projects.”
Balancing Multiple Commitments
In addition to her tech studies, Zainab is currently pursuing a National Diploma (ND) at Transformation College of Business and Technology. Juggling her software development projects, AI research, and academic pursuits is no small feat, but she remains disciplined and focused.
“It’s all about time management,” she explains. “I plan my schedule carefully and stay committed to my goals. My family’s support has also been invaluable.”
A Blessing in Disguise
Looking back, Zainab sees her rejection from university at 12 not as a failure, but as a redirection.
“If I had gone straight to medical school, I might never have discovered my passion for AI,” she reflects. “Now, I have a unique perspective—one that bridges medicine and technology.”
She firmly believes that everything happens for a reason and that her current path is preparing her for something greater.
Advice to Young Minds Facing Setbacks
Zainab’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and self-discovery. To other young people facing unexpected obstacles in their careers, she offers this advice:
“Don’t see setbacks as failures. View them as opportunities for growth and redirection. If one door closes, look for another. Stay curious, keep learning, and never lose sight of your dreams.”
A Future Filled with Possibilities
At just 14 years old, Zainab Akinola has already proven that age is no barrier to greatness. Whether through coding, AI research, or medical innovation, one thing is certain—she is on a path to making a lasting impact in the world.
Her journey is only just beginning, and the world can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.
