A National Diploma student of Business Administration at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has been shot dead by an unidentified gunman at the WAEC bus stop along Herbert Macaulay Road in Lagos.

The institution confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, Adams Adekunle, clarifying that the shooting did not occur within the college premises.

According to the statement, the student, who was enrolled in the college’s Open Distance Learning programme, had earlier been on campus to participate in an examination before the tragic incident.

The college explained that the deceased and a friend were heading towards the Mainland and approached a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Marwa, at the WAEC bus stop.

“The deceased reportedly entered the tricycle first, and as his friend was about to board, a gunshot rang out. The friend discovered that the deceased had been shot,” the statement read.

The friend immediately raised an alarm, attracting nearby colleagues who rushed the victim to the Military Hospital for medical attention. He was, however, confirmed dead shortly after arrival.

The management of YABATECH said it swiftly visited the scene upon receiving news of the incident and engaged relevant security authorities.

The institution dismissed claims circulating on social media that the shooting occurred on campus or that it followed a confrontation involving the student.

“Eyewitness accounts from traders, road transport workers, drivers and passengers present at the time consistently indicated that there was no prior altercation, fight, scramble or commotion before the gunshot,” the statement added.

The college further refuted allegations that the student was shot by a soldier, stating that preliminary findings indicate he was attacked by an unknown gunman at the mini bus park opposite the bridge on Herbert Macaulay Road.

Security agencies, including the police, have launched a full investigation to determine the identity of the gunman and the motive behind the attack.

The management appealed to students, parents and stakeholders to remain calm as investigations continue, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening security measures within and around the campus.

The killing adds to growing concerns over safety in parts of Lagos, particularly around busy transport hubs.
