The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a widely circulated message on social media purporting to list secondary schools whose candidates’ results from the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were withheld over alleged examination malpractice.

The viral message, which appeared under a forged WAEC letterhead and was dated 4 August 2025, claimed that more than 150 schools — including prominent public and private institutions nationwide — were under investigation and directed to report to the WAEC Lagos Zonal Office within 10 working days.

It bore a purported reference number “WAEC/EXM/2025/MAL/256” and a fake signature attributed to a “Dr. Florence Omobonike Ajayi, Director, Examination Malpractice & Irregularities, WAEC Nigeria.”

The fabricated document instructed affected schools to appear before a so‑called WAEC Investigative Panel with “supporting documentation and the affected candidates’ exam scripts” by 16 August 2025.

In response, WAEC spokesperson Moyosola Adesina urged the public to disregard the message, stressing that it did not originate from the Council.

“Kindly ignore any message listing schools whose results were supposedly cancelled. Meanwhile, WAEC will never ask any centre to bring scripts of candidates to the office. Where would they get them from?

Do not accept any message that is not on our handles and accredited media,” Adesina stated.

WAEC reiterated that all official communications on examination results and malpractice cases are released exclusively through its verified channels and recognised media platforms.

The Council warned that the viral message was an act of misinformation capable of causing panic among schools, parents, and candidates, and advised stakeholders to rely only on authentic WAEC publications for accurate information.
