The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State, is working towards generating its own power to address severe energy challenges that have plagued the institution.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Polycarp Chigbu, revealed this at a press briefing on Tuesday ahead of the university’s 53rd convocation ceremony.

Energy Crisis and a Path Forward

Professor Chigbu lamented that escalating electricity bills from the Main Power Electricity Distribution Company and the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) have worsened the institution’s energy issues.

“Our university was disconnected from the national grid for over two months due to these challenges,” he stated.

To mitigate this, the university recently inaugurated the Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Power and Energy Development. The World Bank and Agence Française de Développement fund the initiative.

“We trust that innovation and research from this centre will address not just the university’s energy concerns but also contribute to energy security and sustainability across Sub-Saharan Africa,” Professor Chigbu said.
