UNILAG researchers win AFRETEC seed grants

Two teams from the University of Lagos have won Inclusive Digital Transformation Seed Grants from the African Engineering and Technology Networks (AFRETEC) in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University.

The first team comprising Professor Immaculata Nwokoro (Urban Planning and Enviromental Health – Principal Investigator); Dr. Mokolade Johnson (Architectural Health); Dr. Oluyemi Akindeju (Urban Planning); Dr. AbdulGaniyu Adelopo (Works & Physical Planning) and Dr. Tinuola Odugbemi (Public Health Physician), won a grant for a project titled: An Investigation of a Monitoring and Predicting Algorithm Model for Climate Change Related Diseases in African Urban Cities”.

The second team comprising of Dr. AbdulGaniyu Adelopo, Principal Quality Control Officer at the Works & Physical Planning Unit (Principal Investigator) and Dr. Babatunde Sawyer, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Research Lead, Machine Intelligence Research Group (MIRG)/Artificial Intelligence Lead won a grant for a project titled: Application of AI Techniques for Extracting Carbon from Landfill Waste for Renewable Energy.

The two separate collaborative research projects are expected to commence in June 2024, for a period of one (1) year.

The Nwokoro led group would involve collaborators from the University of Lagos and University of Nairobi, Kenya while the Adelopo led team would involve University of Lagos, Carnegie Mellon University, Rwanda and University of Nairobi, Kenya.
