The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to make history on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, as its Mass Communication Department hosts its first alumnus, Professor Ismail Adegboyega Ibraheem, for an inaugural lecture. The event will mark a significant milestone for the department, established 58 years ago, and comes two decades after the last inaugural lecture from a lecturer within the department.

Addressing Journalism’s Global Challenges

The lecture, titled “Casino Journalism and the End of History,” will explore the ethical, financial, and managerial crises affecting journalism worldwide, with a particular focus on Nigeria. Professor Ibraheem described the lecture as a critical intervention in addressing the struggles facing the media as a pillar of democracy.

Speaking on the significance of the topic, Professor Ibraheem said, “This lecture is my contribution to the body of knowledge on media and governance, especially in today’s socio-political climate. It addresses the urgent need for solutions to ethical lapses and systemic challenges in journalism.”

The lecture, which will take place at UNILAG’s Akoka campus, will be chaired by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola. Former Vice-Chancellors, Professors Rahamon Bello and Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, are also expected to attend.
