The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has commenced plans for the construction of a 170-bed-space hostel for medical students at the College of Medicine (CMUL), Idi-Araba, following the formal handover of the project site to Colton Construction Limited.

The ceremony, held on Wednesday, 1 April 2026, marked the official commencement of the project.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, described the project as a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening infrastructure for the training of medical professionals.

She expressed concern over the continued emigration of medical graduates from Nigeria and its implications for the country’s healthcare system, stressing the need for training institutions to expand capacity and produce more qualified professionals.

Ogunsola also highlighted existing gaps in medical training facilities and underscored the importance of sustained collaboration among stakeholders to address the challenges.

She commended the Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), for supporting the project, as well as the management of CMUL for facilitating its take-off. She added that the hostel, upon completion, would significantly improve student accommodation and support the university’s goal of training up to 1,000 medical doctors annually.
