The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has expelled a 100-level student, Chukwuemeka Victory, from the Department of Public Health over his alleged involvement in a case of phone theft.

The expulsion was confirmed in an official statement issued on Monday, May 19, 2025, by the University Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Chukwuka Icha.

According to the statement, the disciplinary action followed a thorough investigation by the Senate Students Disciplinary Committee (SSDC), which found the student culpable during the 2023/2024 academic session.

“The Vice Chancellor has received the report of the Senate Students Disciplinary Committee, which investigated an alleged case of phone theft during the 2023/2024 Academic Session,” the statement read.
“Senate has approved the recommendation of the SSDC that you be expelled from the university for phone theft.”

The expulsion letter also directed relevant university officials — including the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, the Head of Department of Medicine and Surgery, and the Chief Security Officer — to enforce the decision immediately.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to upholding discipline, stating that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy on all forms of misconduct.
