The Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has approved the dismissal of eight members of staff and imposed disciplinary sanctions on another lecturer over offences ranging from examination malpractice and result falsification to fund diversion, absenteeism, and vandalism.
The decisions were taken at the University’s 174th Governing Council meeting.
According to a memo signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr Mrs Icha Chukwuka, the disciplinary measures followed the Council’s consideration of reports submitted by relevant disciplinary committees.
Among those dismissed is Professor Emilia Oyira of the Department of Nursing Science, who was sanctioned over alleged examination misconduct.
Also dismissed are Mr Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington of the Department of Chemical Pathology, Mrs Akinrinade Opayemi Ogunluyi of the Department of Microbiology, Dr Arum Priscilia Nchekwube of the Department of Internal Medicine, and Mrs Okoi Nyesam Eni of the Clinical Medical Hostel, all of whom were dismissed for absence from duty and abandonment of their official responsibilities.
The Council also approved the dismissal of Mr Joseph Edet Okon of the Works Department over allegations of vandalising and stealing armoured electrical cables.
Similarly, Mr Eworo Valentine Ibor of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry was dismissed for allegedly falsifying and altering examination results.
Mr Emmanuel Adariku of the Alumni Relations Office was also dismissed over the alleged unauthorised withdrawal of funds from the Friends of Malabor/Alumni Trust Funds account.
In a separate disciplinary measure, Dr Mathias Agba of the Department of Nursing Science was sanctioned with a two-year delay in promotion and the forfeiture of 50 per cent of his withheld salary over negligence in connection with an examination misconduct case.
The University said the sanctions underscore its commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and accountability within the institution.
According to the Registrar, the University “continues to reiterate its zero tolerance to all forms of unethical practices.”
The statement further noted that the administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Offiong Efanga Offiong, remains committed to repositioning the institution on the principles of integrity, accountability, and excellence in service delivery.
The University added that the disciplinary actions were carried out in accordance with due process following the Governing Council’s deliberation on the reports presented before it.
