UNIBEN appoints Edoba Omoregie as new Vice-Chancellor

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has appointed Professor Edoba Omoregie, a respected expert in constitutional law and governance, as its new Vice-Chancellor. The announcement was made on Friday in Benin by the Chairman of the university’s Governing Council, Professor Shaibu Umaru.

Professor Omoregie, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was selected from a competitive field of 27 candidates vying for the role. He will succeed the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lillian Salami, whose term concludes on December 1.

A native of Benin, Professor Omoregie was born on April 5, 1969. He has a long-standing connection with the institution, having completed his undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral studies at the University of Benin.

His academic and legal career began with his call to the Nigerian Bar in 1992, and he achieved the distinguished title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2021.

The University’s Governing Council expressed confidence in Professor Omoregie’s capabilities, citing his vast experience and expertise in governance and law as invaluable assets for steering the institution towards growth and academic excellence.

As he prepares to assume office, there is optimism within the university community that his leadership will bring fresh perspectives to address the challenges facing the institution.
