The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof Abdul-Rasheed Na’allah, has today approves academic calendars for three years.

It is contained in a circular released by the university over the weekend.

The circular reads;

University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) VC APPROVES 3-YEAR ACADEMIC CALENDAR

My Dear University Community,

I am happy to announce that SBC met on December 30 to review and recommend a proposed 3-year academic Calendar, and I have therefore approved, on behalf of the University Senate, the following Academic Calendar, which comes into effect immediately, and please find a copy also attached for easy download. The 3-year calendar will be available on the University Main Website. This calendar is built on the UofA’s aspirations for a stable and sacrosanct Academic Calendar which allows enough time for lectures and for sufficient mid-session break for academic staff.

This new Academic Calendar also introduces a Long Vacation Session where academic departments can rerun courses, especially GST courses, with a significant number of failures by students, to allow students another opportunity to re-take them before the next academic year. It is called Long Vacation Session and not “semester” because it is a session on its own within the academic year for rerun of some courses and NOT a third semester, since no new courses are offered and is not intended to shorten the number of years for regular students who generally pass their courses. Therefore, a student who has not offered and failed a course before would NOT be able to register for that course. The Long Vacation Session (LVS) would offer opportunities for students who have carried over some courses to try to pass them.

I look forward to seeing you all in the new academic year! Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me if there is any way I can be helpful to you in your academic endeavors.

Happy New Year! Now, read below.

[1] During Summer or Long Vacation Session, academic departments may offer a rerun of courses in which many students have recorded a fail grade, and where students have indicated a significantly interest in retaking during the Long Vacation Session. Lecturers who teach such courses are paid separately from their regular salaries as students are charged fair cost per credit hour in order to register. Only classes that make a University determined viable number of registered students are offered otherwise a class that does not make such a number is canceled, except where a lecturer offers in writing to teach it as a tutored-study, which attracts less renumeration to the lecturer.
